Buenos
Aires History - Buenos Aires is the capital
of the republic of Argentina, situated on bank of
the river de la plata. It is the fifth largest city
in the world and one of the most important in Latin
American. It is very upbeat, vibrant and full of intellectual
and artistic activity. Both tourists and residents,
with all that it has to offer in terms of cultural
activities and sight seeing love the city of Buenos
Aires.
Buenos Aires was established in
1580. The city was given its name in honor of the
patron saint of sailors, Virgin of Buen Ayre. There
were only 500 people in the city at that time. Buenos
Aires became the capital of the Rio de la Plata in
1776. By the early 1800s the city's population grew
to 7,500. In the years between 1895 and 1912 the population
of the country doubled to 7.5 million. The people
of Buenos Aires came to be called portenos, or people
of the port. Buenos Aires is reminiscent of Paris
due to the many divergent immigrants who arrived in
the last century. Its music, reflected in the many
aspects of the "tango", is also a consequence
of this cultural diversity.
It is the financial and economical seat of the country
and Buenos Aires is the main port of the nation. It
has an intense commercial activity, numerous shops
and cultural exhibits. Buenos Aires is
broken up into little neighborhoods. The beautiful
Recoleta, Palermo, El Centro, San Telmo, Puerta Madera
and La Boca are all integral parts of this great city.
11.125.000 people strong now Buenos Aires is holding
its own and is a highlight for tourists every year.
